The Media and Its Use to the Committee

Finding wisdom in the old addage, "People believe what they hear most", Fredericks' people soon came to appreciate the power of the media in all of its forms. The Committee holds ownership of all the major broadcasting and publishing companies, which produces exactly what the WMC wants the world to see. The handful of independent news outlets still in business are kept on a very short leash by government regulations. Computers come with built-in blockers to discourage viewing internet material deemed "inappropriate" by the Committee.

From time to time, news reporters have stumbled upon some bit of information not intended for the public to digest during live reports. Fortunately for the WMC, they have contingency plans set up to flood the channels with plenty of misinformation and attractive commercials so that whatever ideas the people might get are drown out by images of happy cola drinkers and the Committee's own spin on what's been shown.

The greatest trick pulled off by the Committee-controlled media was the WMC's response to the bombing deaths of the last American malcontents in South Dakota. By the time the people got wind of the holocaust and started to think something was up, new reports poured in stating that the malcontents were part of a larger terrorist group that was just then being brought to justice. For the tempers left unquelled by the Committee spawned lies, President Fredericks himself addressed the people saying that the South Dakota incident was terrible clash of interests that was inevitable. A memorial was erected for the malcontents, and the bombing location was closed to the public pending further notice.
